Cliff Edge Shiraz 2004 Mount Langi Ghiran
Matured in a blend of new French and older American oak for 18 months. Dark red (no signs of oxidation thanks to the screwcap). Intense, complex nose of blackberries, blackcurrants, vanilla, wet earth and some celery. Surprisingly good acids in the mouth with blueberries, cherries, smoked bacon and a hint of black pepper. Ripe but a bit ’sticky’ tannins. Sour finish (not too long). It lacks the expected ripe fruitiness of the Australian shiraz wines, however, Jane Macquitty (The Times) thinks it’s perfect for the barbecue. Alc. 14.5%. Price: £11.99
